Case: Divorce after an approximately thirty year marriage. We represented the Wife. The major issue in the case was the family business which was inherited and owned by the Husband and his brother, and the Wife’s contribution to that business throughout the marriage due to the fact that she was not an “employee.” [Inherited property in RI is not divisible, on its face.]
Result: We used a business evaluation and negotiations with opposing counsel to reach a resolution that awarded the Wife a specific amount of support for a sufficient amount of time to get herself on her feet. She was an artist and needed time to reinvent her business and get it off of the ground so she could be self-sufficient.
